Second Battle of Ypres
At 5 p.m on the 22nd of April, 1915, the German Army released 171 tonnes of Chlorine gas on the Western Front nearby Ypres. However, unfavourable winds meant that many German troops were killed by the Chlorine gas. Despite the use of Chlorine gas opening a line in the Allied defences, the Central Powers were not able to take advantage of the situation to break through the front line. Despite eventually managing to force British troops to retreat, Allied forces remained in control of Ypres.
